Tires are what connect the wheel to the road, thus putting the car in motion and giving it traction. Without these simple pieces of rubber, cars would barely be able to move and certainly not in the intended direction. However simple they may seem, tires are made up of many parts. The following breakdown will walk you through the major components of the tire?s structure, their location, and their purposes for both passenger car tires, truck tires, and for SUV tires. | |
PASSENGER CAR TIRES |
|
The following is a breakdown of the different parts of a passenger car tire and the function of each part.
Shoulder The shoulder on each side of the tread is built to protect the belt and the carcass of the tire and to displace the heat that is generated There are round and square shoulder shapes available. Sidewall This is the section of the tire that deflects most while your vehicle is in motion. The rubber layer serves as a barrier to protect the carcass and this is where you?ll find all the information on the tire such as the tire size, brand name, etc. Bead The bead is area of the tire that stabilizes the entire carcass. It anchors the tire to the wheel. Some tires will provide a lip protector on the bead which will help it in keeping any scuffing of the lip onto your custom wheel. Tread This is the area of the tire that will make contact with the driving surface. The tread is made up of a layer of rubber, which is designed to suit a specific purpose. Its thickness was made to protect the carcass as well as the belt. Specialty treads are also available that will do that as well as improve traction, improve water drainage, or even improve breaking and cornering. Belt The belt is a layer that strengthens the tire; it extends all the way around the outer part of the carcass underneath the tread. It is designed to improve the stiffness of the tire?s tread. Carcass This part of the tire serves as the load bearing framework that forms the tire?s body shape. The carcass is made out of a rubber coated fabric as well as steel cords that are placed in a radial direction. It contains the inflation pressure that helps out to support the load and the overall absorbing of impact. Inner Liner The inner liner is the area of the tire that is made of a special rubber that attaches to the carcass. It is designed to withstand a high resistance to air migration. |
